Commissioner of Oaths

A Commissioner of Oath is an individual who is authorized by law to witness signatures for certain documents which include affidavits, oaths, pension documents from other countries and statutory declarations.

Commissioner of Oath services are offered through the Townships Clerk's Department during regular office hours. To ensure a staff member is available booking an appointment is recommended.

Documentation Requirements

Once you are certain the Township can commission your document, you must visit the Clerk's Department in person. The request for the Commissioner of Oaths service must be made by the same individual who will be taking the oath and signing the document. You must present one original piece of photo identification (no copies permitted) in the form of government-issued photo identification: i.e. a valid driver's license, a valid passport, which includes your address.

All documents to be commissioned must be signed in the presence of the Commission of Oaths.

Travel Forms

A Commissioner can also sign a travel form. A travel form is recommended by the Canadian Border Services Agency when a minor is travelling with only one parent or with any person other than both parents. The parent or parents not travelling with the child can fill out the Consent Letter for Children Travelling Abroad form at the Township Office.

The process will take time to complete and fees and conditions apply. Please allow sufficient time and call ahead to ensure a Commissioner will be available. If you have not planned ahead for this, you may not be able to obtain the travel form and it may compromise your ability to travel across international borders. Under no circumstances will a travel form be signed by a Commissioner without the appropriate parent(s) present or without valid government issued photo identification.

The Township does not provide Notary Public services. A list of Notary Publics and lawyers who notarize documents can be found in your local phone directory.
