Township of Wellesley Renames Recreation Department to Community Services Department

September 24, 2026, Crosshill, ON – The Council of the Township of Wellesley ratified a motion at its September 22, 2026, regular Council meeting, to rename the Recreation Department to Community Services Department.

The former Recreation Department’s operations have grown significantly since opening the Township of Wellesley Recreation Complex at 1401 Queen’s Bush Road. The new facility introduced programming and rental options that did not exist in the Township prior to opening the facility.

The new Community Services Department title recognizes the evolution of recreation services in the Township, which has evolved into a a two-stream service area – parks and operations; and recreation programming/rentals. Changing the name better aligns with recognizing the two streams, as well as aligning with other municipalities where this department name is common.

Renaming the department will not add any additional staff. A slightly revised department organizational structure is expected to provide for better reporting and alignment of duties, thereby improving customer service without adding additional staff. Considerable time has been dedicated to reviewing and refining job descriptions within the department to ensure roles, responsibilities, and qualification requirements are clearly defined and aligned with the Township's future needs. Work is ongoing to strengthen internal processes, including employee onboarding, staff training, and the development of standard operating procedures.

Staff will update the new department name on the Township’s website, correspondence and documentation over the coming weeks. Operations and current position contacts will remain largely unchanged so users should not experience any inconveniences as a result of this transition.
