Township of Wellesley Severe Weather Event September 2, 2026
September 3, 2026, Crosshill, ON – On Wednesday September 2, 2026 at approximately 5:25
pm the Township of Wellesley experienced a severe weather event in the form of torrential rains,
thunderstorms, lightning and extreme wind conditions. The storm conditions affected the entire
Township with the most damage being concentrated in the area between Bamberg and the Village
of Wellesley along the Weimer Line and Hessen Strasse corridor. A number of hydro poles were
knocked down on Hutchison Road between Deborah Glaister and Streicher Line, as well as a
transformer fire on Queensbush Road and hydro lines being down along Weimer Line. Trees and
branches were uprooted and broken off throughout the Township, David Street in the Village of
Wellesley being closed due to trees on the road making access impossible. The Township’s Chief
Building Official identified structural damage to eight rural barns and drive sheds ranging from roof
damage to full collapse. No injuries have been reported and no livestock lost. The Public works
department called in staff to clean up debris and close roads and all three Township Fire Halls and
available firefighters responded to the emergency closing roads, blocking downed power lines and
doing wellness checks on vulnerable residences and residents. Hydro was restored to the majority
of the Township in the early a.m on Thursday September 3, 2026.
The clean up is expected to last into next week as the Township continues to work with Enova and
the Region of Waterloo to get everything cleaned up and fully functional.
