Roads and Parking

Roadways are used for several means of transportation in the Township, motor vehicles, cyclists, pedestrians and horse drawn carriage. Safety of the travelling public is a high priority to the Public Works department who maintain approximately 220km of roadway.

January 2025 - Road Reconstruction Update:

Phase 1 & 2 of the Queen's Bush Road reconstruction project are now complete and the 3rd phase will be completed in 2025 which includes a final top coat of asphalt from Greenwood Hill Road to Village Road and any deficiencies that were not previously corrected. The Township appreciates both residents and visitors patience over the course of the construction period.

The Council of the Township of Wellesley approved the use of snow events in January of 2022 after a successful pilot project in previous winters. When there is significant snowfall, the Director of Public Works or his/her designate has been granted the authority to declare a snow event. When a snow event is declared, residents cannot park on any highways in the Township until the declaration has been lifted. The declaration is made for a 12 or 24 hour period  unless weather conditions warrant an extension or early cancellation. The declaration is made based on credible weather forecast information when a minimum of 8 centimeters of snow is expected. Once the declaration is made, Municipal By-law Enforcement Officers have the authority to issue tickets to vehicles parked on any roadway in the Township. A declaration of a snow event supersedes the “no parking” restrictions set out in the Traffic and Parking By-law 4/2021 which restricts parking on Township roads between 4:00am and 9:00am during the winter months.

A snow event declaration is not to be considered a report on road conditions or current weather, but strictly as a parking ban put in place to allow snow plow operators the ability to safely and efficiently plow the roads after a significant snowfall.

Many area municipalities declare snow events in a similar fashion with parking ticket fine amounts increased during the snow event duration. A snow event would be declared by 5:00pm to come into effect at midnight, giving residents time to move their vehicles if parked on a highway. If a snow event is declared, notifications will be posted on Township social media accounts as well as a notification to local media outlets.

Parking

Most schools have signed areas that are designated to accommodate motorists dropping off or picking up students.

Drivers should not use the "No Stopping" or "No Parking" zones in the vicinity of schools.

These areas must be kept clear to provide clear visibility for motorists and students.

Drivers should never double park to load or discharge students from their vehicles as this creates a dangerous position of crossing lanes of traffic without seeing or being seen by other motorists.

The "no stopping" anytime signs:

  • The most restrictive parking regulations.
  • Once a vehicle has ceased moving, even if occupied, it is stopped and would be prohibited in these areas

The "no parking" anytime signs:

  • Means that drivers may use these zones while actually engaged in loading or unloading goods or to pick up or discharge passengers.
  • Remember, the key "while actually engaged".

Do not leave vehicles unattended in these areas.

Sidewalks are built for pedestrians, whether they are walking, pushing a baby stroller, in a wheelchair, or for children playing.

Vehicles are not permitted to park and obstruct sidewalks at any time.

When parking in a driveway ensure that the sidewalk is clear, and no vehicles are overhanging onto the sidewalk.

Traffic and Parking By-law 4/2021 prohibits parking on Township streets between the hours of 4:00am and 9:00am December 1st to March 31st without written request to the Township.

The Township of Wellesley restricts on-street parking to provide safe snow removal and emergency services to Township residents. Parked cars can make plowing difficult and sometimes impossible. With your help, winter maintenance crews can plow faster and more efficiently.

Snow Removal

The Township of Wellesley is committed to providing safe roads for the travelling public during the winter season using efficient, economical and environmentally friendly methods.

The Public Works division is responsible for approximately 220 km of rural and urban roads. Winter maintenance of Township roads is completed in accordance with the Ontario Minimum Maintenance Standards for Ontario Highways (O. Reg 239/02).

Roads are patrolled frequently and weather forecasts are monitored during the winter months to assess conditions and deploy equipment and materials as necessary.

Please assist the snowplow operators by making sure your mailbox is in a good state of repair and not an obstruction.

The owner or occupant of every building is responsible to clear all snow and ice from sidewalks in front of or adjacent to their property. Sidewalks must be cleared within 24 hours after the end of a snow fall or freezing rain event. For more details see By-law 12/2011.

Metal road markers or stakes are not permitted on property boundaries abutting the Townships roads or highways as they have a greater chance of causing injury. Permitted road markers are wood, plastic or fibreglass. A written warning will be provided to homeowners and if not removed following the warning  Township staff will remove them.

Please ensure all roadside basketball nets are removed prior to the first snowfall to allow proper road clearing in the snow plow zone. A written warning will be provided to homeowners and if not removed following the warning Township staff will remove them.
